The idea of meeting current and future energy needs through the practice of energy efficiency measures is nothing new. Indeed, making the most of existing energy generation has long been viewed as a simple, cost-effective way to address, for example, global warming, energy security and fossil fuel depletion. The tide of energy efficiency interest and, ultimately, implementation, ebbs and flows in tandem with energy prices, but doesn't necessarily catch on beyond the latest price drop. Now, the tide may be slowly turning as corporations and individuals alike are seeing real, long-term advantages to making the most of the energy they make and use. This award recognizes a long-term, systematic commitment to energy efficiency, as opposed to a "flash-in-the-pan" project. The strongest entries here will have embraced efficiency in a way that seeks to make it work now and for the foreseeable future.
"Energy efficiency program" is broadly defined for this award and the judges will consider everything from utility demand-side management program portfolios to energy management programs run within large corporations or agencies seeking to improve the way they use their energy.
Judges will consider performance and achievements since January 2008.
