The Platts Global Energy Awards will honor Paul M. Anderson, CEO of Duke Energy, with the Lifetime Achievement Award on November 30 in New York City. Anderson has repeatedly taken on tough business challenges and turned them into success stories. He has steered three troubled companies into safer waters--Houston-based Panhandle Eastern, Australia-based BHP and Charlotte-based Duke Energy.
An expert in streamlining operations, Anderson won financial industry admiration for cutting Duke Energy's debt by $4.6 billion in the course of a single year while making good on a pledge not to cut the company's dividend. Since 2003 Duke has raised its dividend twice.
But Anderson isn't afraid to go against the grain. Three years ago, Anderson addressed the issue of global warming head-on, calling for a carbon tax in the U.S. At a time when many in the energy industry were soft-pedaling or playing for time, Anderson helped launch the climate change dialogue.
His vision landed him in Rolling Stone magazine as one the "20 Warriors for the Environment." According to the magazine, "In the normally staid utility industry, Anderson is something of a maverick." Newsweek dubbed him the "Radical Exec."
